How to unblock websites at school or work

School and office networks often block websites: video sites, social networks, games, sometimes even news or government pages that happen to fall into a blocked category. A web proxy opens them without installing anything. Here is how it works, and what to keep in mind.

Why websites are blocked at school and at work

Schools, universities, companies, libraries and public Wi-Fi networks put a filter between their users and the internet. The filter looks at which website a device connects to and compares it with lists of categories: social media, streaming, games, chat, and often "proxies and VPNs" too. Because whole categories are blocked at once, filters regularly catch harmless websites as well, such as a government service, a news article you need for homework, or a tool you use for work.

Typical filters are run by the network itself (school or company firewalls, DNS filters, content filters from the internet provider) or by software installed on the device.

How a web proxy gets around the filter

A network filter can only block what it sees. When you open a website through OnlineProxy.eu, your browser only connects to our site; our server in the EU fetches the website for you. The filter sees a connection to OnlineProxy.eu and nothing it was told to block, so the page opens.

  1. Go to www.onlineproxy.eu.
  2. Type the address of the blocked website, for example wikipedia.org, or just a search word.
  3. Press Go. The website opens in the same tab, and every link you click stays inside the proxy.

Nothing has to be installed, so it also works on computers where you have no administrator rights, on school Chromebooks, and on phones and tablets.

If the proxy itself is blocked

Some filters also block known proxy websites. If www.onlineproxy.eu does not load on your network, try the classic version at its own address, which not every filter blocks. Switching from the school Wi-Fi to your phone's mobile data avoids the network's filter completely.

What a proxy does not hide

Stay within the rules

Filters at school and at work are usually part of the rules you agreed to. Getting around them can have consequences there, even when it is not illegal. Use the proxy for what you need, for example research for a project or a government website that was blocked by mistake, and ask your school's or company's IT staff to unblock websites that you need regularly: blocks in the wrong category are often lifted quickly.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, no subscription and nothing to install.

Does it work on a Chromebook, iPad or phone?

Yes, in any current browser. Some private browsing modes switch off a browser feature the proxy needs; if a website does not open, try a normal window.

Why does a website still not work?

Some websites refuse visitors that come from servers instead of home connections, or ask for a browser check that cannot be completed through a proxy. Video platforms sometimes do the same for playback. That is the website's choice, not the school's filter.

Is a VPN better?

A VPN protects all the traffic of a device, but it has to be installed, which school and work computers usually do not allow. A web proxy is the quickest way to open a single blocked website. See also websites blocked in your country.
